COVID-19 and Pregnancy

For many women, pregnancy is already a time of uncertainty. COVID-19 is only making these times more shaky. Instead of remaining with this uncertainty, we want you to be well-informed about what COVID-19 may mean for you and your child.

Pregnancy and Birth

Though much remains unknown about the virus, the CDC has not seen any major differences in the manner and frequency of the contraction of the virus between pregnant and non-pregnant women. However, pregnant women are usually more susceptible to contracting illnesses. Though we haven’t seen anything significant in the way that pregnant women contract COVID-19, it’s still important to guard your body and your children from the virus by following the CDC recommended steps of social distancing, wearing a mask, and sanitizing your hands frequently.

CDC data has also suggested that mother-to-child transmission of the virus is very unlikely during birth. However, it’s important to remember that your child can contract the virus after birth, if in contact with an infected person. If you are concerned about giving birth in a hospital, or about attending prenatal/postpartum checkups, please talk to your healthcare provider about the risks.

The limited data gathered by the CDC suggests that COVID-19 transmission through breast milk is not likely. Breast milk can help your infant’s immune system and protect against illnesses. If you have questions about if breastfeeding is safe for you, we suggest consulting your family and healthcare providers.

Stress and Uncertainty

Pregnant women and parents may be dealing with higher stress levels due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We encourage you to find healthy ways to cope with your stress, and to stay in touch with close family and friends.
